Man Imprisoned in Fake Viagra Ring

A Houston based fake Viagra and Cialis pills racket run by a Pakistani national got busted in Texas on December 19th   landing the culprit a sentence of thirteen months in prison and a compensation of $140,000 to Pfizer and Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical manufacturers. This exposure shows that counterfeiters still exist in our society despite all the precautions and vigil of the authorities.

The guy behind the story is an illegal migrant from Pakistan, Irfan Qadir who traded about 8000 pills in a span of six months before his arrest. Interestingly in all the cases the fake drugs are allegedly supplied from China at an average of one fourth the cost. In the year 2010, about 8.3 million fake tablets were seized across the world in the brand of the Pfizer group alone. The Chinese government, in attempts to for erase such episodes has managed to seize fake pills during several encounters. One of the big encounters of this nature were first witnessed in the year 2009 when 840,000 pills worth 30 million Yuan (US$4.7 million) were confiscated in Shanghai, Hebei and Guangdong by government officials.

The fakes can be dangerous when you consider the menial standard ingredients that go into the making. Some of the substances used are blue printer ink, metronidazole (a powerful antibiotic that could cause an allergic reaction, diarrhea or vomiting if taken without moderation),  binding agents such as drywall that prevent the tablet from breaking down in your system, toxic ingredients such as floor wax, boric acid, brick dust and road paint and Amphetamines also known as “speed”. It isn’t too hard to anticipate the kind of effects it could have the consumers. The production procedure and conditions are also suspected to be dire.

“Another thing with counterfeits is they are often manufactured in places where you wouldn’t even want to walk around,” said Bill Donnelly, Pfizer’s chief of anti-counterfeiting for North America.

Identifying fake Viagra are undertaken with a little care to the appearance, taste etc.  Though the fake producers put in a lot of effort in creating an undistinguishable lot, one must check for the blue, film coated tablet. These tablets are tasteless before one swallows them and are hard in consistency. One must try to get it from an authorised source and consult the doctor before buying from a source. A lot of online routes are suspect.
